Accreditation

ELA is a member of the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP) and Association of International Educators (NAFSA). The ELA is currently seeking accreditation from the Commission of English Language Program (CEA), which is recognized by the Secretary of the Department of Education.

Cerrtificate: This 10-unit certificate program, which takes 100 hours to complete, is held in your country and offered at a location and during times convenient for your school. Typically, the Course of Study includes the five core courses listed in the table below.  However, private groups can work with us to customize the Course of Study to substitute a core(s) course with an elective(s).

Introduction to Second Language Acquisition (SLA) Theories: Students will trace the historical development of the theories and concepts in the field of SLA, and study methods of implementing current theories in the ESL classroom.

Methods of Teaching ESL: Students will synthesize theoretical knowledge in the field of linguistics and second language acquisition with the 'practice' of creating materials and utilizing instructional methodologies in the ESL classroom.

Practicum: Field Research in an ESL Classroom: Students will understand the role that English plays on the Global platform and learn approaches to teaching English to students from different cultures and backgrounds.

Linguistics for Teaching English to Students of Other Languages: Students will gain an understanding of important concepts in the field of linguistics as it applies to pedagogical methods and language learning in an ESL classroom.

Practicum: Field Research in an ESL Classroom: Students will survey various aspects of an ESL classroom including such areas as classroom interaction, teacher views, student views, teaching styles, and classroom format. They will observe one aspect that interests them and write a critical paper based on their observations. Students will also be required to teach one lesson in an ESL classroom

Elective Options by Request

Assessment and Evaluation in ESL: Students will understand key concepts in the assessment and evaluation of the curriculum, syllabus design, and the testing of ESL students.

Introduction to Sociolinguistics & Cross Cultural Communications: Students will learn about the dynamics of verbal and nonverbal communication and how social constructs influence the linguistic medium of communication.

Teaching Pronunciation: Students will learn various methodologies of teaching pronunciation to ESL students.

Technology in the ESL Classroom: Students will learn to use technology in the ESL classroom to supplement and enhance student learning.

Creating a Communicative Classroom: Students will learn various competencies and focus on the methods of developing a communicative classroom.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language: Students teaching ESL outside of the United States are required to take this elective course. This course is designed to teach the National Standards of Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Students will become familiar with the 5 Cs, and will learn to develop and carry out lesson plans in accordance with the national standards.

Teaching Grammar: Students will learn the various approaches for teaching grammar in the ESL classroom. They will also learn methodologies of teaching particular grammatic
