Center for Christian Spirituality
The Center for Christian Spirituality (CCS), the successor to the Institute for Christian Ministries, began in the Fall of 2001. While Christian spirituality is the tradition in which the Center is rooted, all people who want their lives to be consonant with their deepest values and meaning are welcome and respected. The diversity of our beliefs and cultures is itself a great gift. The goal of the Center is to address and foster spirituality in these areas.
Center for Educational Excellence
The Center for Educational Excellence (CEE) supports the university in all phases of pedagogical development. The Center is committed to assisting in promoting the institution's core values of academic excellence, knowledge, community, ethical conduct, and compassionate service. The Center provides a series of integrated programs and events and a variety of resources to assist faculty in creating an intellectually challenging environment for learning. The Center is staffed by the director, and the CEE staff, and is advised by the CEE Advisory Committee with academic representatives.
Center for Inclusion and Diversity
The University of San Diego believes academic excellence requires a learning community that is characterized by inclusive engagement with diverse peoples and perspectives. The benefits of a rich, diverse learning community are most likely realized when institutions demonstrate high levels of commitment to inclusion and diversity. In support of that commitment, the work of the Center for Inclusion and Diversity will be organized around a concept of diversity that is fluid and which can include multiple social and cultural identities, such as race, gender, sexual orientation, class, group affiliation, ability, national origin, and religion. The Center recognizes that within this list, at any given time and place, some individual or group characteristics are given higher value and accommodation than others. The process of elevating some characteristics of identity can lead to the silencing of others, particularly if members of one group systematically neglect the perspectives and aspirations of others. A truly excellent academic community encourages respect and cooperation among groups and the vigorous debate and examination of new and competing ideas within a community that values shared governance.
Center for Peace and Commerce
The Center for Peace and Commerce (CPC) is a collaborative effort between the School of Business Administration and the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies to prepare new generations of "change agents" who develop and exercise innovative approaches for achieving the 4 Ps– people, profit, planet and peace. CPC's role is to contribute in creating new enterprise paradigms and solutions, that foster peace-building and poverty alleviation, through courses, scholarship, enterprise development, active engagement with multiple stakeholders and the promotion of good governance.
Service learning reflects the mission of USD, which embraces the Catholic moral and social tradition by its commitment to serve with compassion, to foster peace and to work for justice, and prepare leaders dedicated to ethical conduct and compassionate service. Through service, Community Service-Learning (CSL) engages USD students, faculty, staff, and alumni to learn in partnership with the community, and make life-long commitments to promote social change and justice.
Frances G. Harpst Center for Catholic Thought and Culture
The agenda of the Center for Catholic Thought and Culture is: to develop thought-provoking programs that will engage the University and local community in critical dialogue with the Catholic intellectual tradition; to promote Catholic Social Teaching and its integration into the academic life of the University community; to provide conferences, liturgical and cultural events and exhibits that showcase the Catholic Church’s rich heritage and its contributions to the arts, letters and sciences and to all which ennobles humans to pursue what is right and just; and to provide faculty with opportunities and financial support to develop quality courses that expose students to the Catholic intellectual tradition.
Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies
The Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies will anchor its growth on the strong foundation that has been established at the University of San Diego. USD’s values, tradition and strategic priorities provide a fertile setting for the School. The University community supports the School as a global initiative and an integrated learning opportunity. Students and faculty are attracted to the University’s exceptional commitment to social justice, ethics and leadership, and cultural diversity. The School will draw on the capabilities of its active institutes and programs.
Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice
Through education, research, and peacemaking activities, the Institute for Peace and Justice (IPJ) offers programs that advance scholarship and practice in conflict resolution and human rights. The Institute for Peace & Justice at the University of San Diego draws upon Catholic social teaching that sees peace as inseparable from justice and acts to prevent and resolve conflicts that threaten local, national and international peace.
The Trans-Border Institute (TBI) was created in 1994 with two main objectives: 1) to promote border-related scholarship, activities and community at the University of San Diego, and 2) to promote an active role for the University in the cross-border community. To realize these objectives, the Institute engages in a variety of programmatic activities and initiatives.
Inspired by the demands and values in the Gospels, the tradition of Catholic Social Thought, the mission statement of the University of San Diego, and the life and work of Archbishop Oscar Romero, University Ministry offers a variety of local service opportunities, monthly trips to Tijuana, Mexico, and immersion experiences in El Salvador and Tijuana. The purpose of each of these programs is to form hearts that long for justice, to empower students to be always conscious of the poor, and to encourage students to live in solidarity with the lost, the least, and the left out. The service and social justice programs sponsored by University Ministry help participants see the world with new eyes, go deeper in their faith, and cultivate an enduring commitment to social justice.
