Enrique Morones will speak about his experience as an immigrants' rights activist in San Diego. Mr. Morones will also describe the history and background of Border Angels, the non-profit which he founded in 1986 and is recognized as one of the most active human rights organizations in the country. Mr. Morones' work emphasizes the importance of education in accomplishing effective social change, and how citizens can make a difference. This event is free to the publc.

Dr. May Fu is an Assistant Professor with the Center for Applied Studies in American Ethnicity and the Department of History at Colorado State University. She holds degrees in History, English and Ethnic Studies from UCLA, UCSD, and University of Minnesota. Her teaching and research interests include the comparative histories of racialized groups, social movements, gender and labor, and the politics of historiography. Her current research examines Asian American community organizing during the 1970s and explores the panethnic, interracial, and international affiliations that shaped Asian American radicalism. This event is free to the publc.

This workshop will examine the activists and artists who were involved in the struggle for Chicana/o Studies. Panelists will include activists who are creating an archive at San Diego State chronicling the role of Latinos in the educational reform movement, the formation of Chicano Studies, and broader issues in the Chicano movement. Panelists will include such long time activists and scholars as Rita Sanchez, Sonia Lopez, Olivia Puentes Reynolds, Gracia Molina de Pick, Felicitas Nunez, and Evelyn Cruz (USD). The panel discussion will be accompanied by archival material from the Chicano Movement in San Diego, including rare photos, posters, and videos.

Tony Campolo, professor emeritus at Eastern University, is the founder of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education, an organization that develops schools and social programs in various third world countries and in cities across North America. He is the author of 35 books, his latest three being, "Letters to a Young Evangelical," "The God of Intimacy and Action" and his most recent release is "Red Letter Christians, A Citizen’s Guide to Faith and Politics." Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice’s WorldLink Program places a unique focus on global education where middle and high school students learn about local and global issues. High Tech High International, an avid WorldLink partner, also expands students’ perceptions of global policies through rigorous academics and relevant workplace skills. Through innovation and dedication, program administrators and young leaders from both programs join forces in this panel to demonstrate the global power of youth.

Reflections on Justice for Immigrants

Cardinal Theodore Edgar McCarrick was the fifth Cardinal Archbishop of the Washington DC Diocese from 2001-2006. In 2007 he became a Counselor at The Center for Strategic and International Studies in DC. The CSIS seeks to advance global security and prosperity in an era of economic and political transformation by providing strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers. CSIS serves as a strategic planning partner for the government by conducting research and analysis and developing policy initiatives that look into the future and anticipate change. Cardinal McCarrick is the co-author of, Strangers No Longer: together on the Journey of Hope.

This event is co-sponsored by Catholic Charities, Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, Diocesan Committee, and Justice for Immigrants Campaign.
