Information for Faculty Mentors
ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
Do I submit the abstract on behalf of my student?
No, your student collaborator will submit the abstract electronically. He/she will identify you as the faculty advisor for the project.
We presented this collaborative project at another conference. Can we present at the Creative Collaborations Conference as well?
Yes.
I am the thesis advisor for a student in the Honors Program. Can my student present his/her thesis at the Creative Collaborations Conference?
Yes. This conference will be a good opportunity to prepare for his/her formal Honors thesis project presentation.
I have more than one student working with me on one project. Do they all need to submit an abstact for the same project?
No. Only the one lead student author will submit the abstact on behalf of his/her other student collaborators. There will be a place on the submission site where this student can note any other student collaborators on this project.
Can I serve as a faculty advisor for more than one submission?
Yes.
POSTERS
Is there a specific format we are supposed to follow when creating our poster?
The format will be determined by your specific discipline. Use your field's standard conference presentation guidelines for preparing your poster. For posters that will be printed at USD's Instructional Media Services (IMS), students must use the template provided and must sign-up for an online printing time which is available when their abstract has been submitted. All posters should include faculty sponsor name and department, the student(s) name(s), and the title of the project. Each poster board space will be 4 feet x 4 feet.
Is there anything I need to do specifically to prepare my student for the conference?
It is a good idea to give the student a general idea of what an undergraduate conference will entail. Encourage your student to be able to give a 5-minute summary of the project. For students who are presenting projects that use technical concepts or terms, encourage your student(s) to be able to explain these ideas in non-discipline specific terminology. Brainstorm possible questions that the attendees might ask. Also encourage your students to thoroughly read the Creative Collaborations Web site for additional information (e.g., appropriate attire) for students (link on “students”) on the day of the conference.
What is the order of authorship for the Creative Collaborations Conference?
Your name will be listed as the faculty sponsor (e.g., "Faculty Sponsor: John Smith, Ph.D."). Your student will be listed as primary author on this poster since he/she will be the main presenter. Any additional student collaborators will be listed after your lead student author.
How do I acknowledge a funding source for this project for myself or my student?
On the poster, your student can insert a statement of acknowledgement including the name of the funding source and the name of the indivudal who received the grant.
THE DAY OF THE CONFERENCE
I am not able to attend the conference. Do I need to be present on the day of the presentation?
Although you are encouraged to attend the conference, it is not required. Your primary role will be in preparing your student for the presentation.
What is the schedule of events for the conference?
Please see the Conference Schedule on the General Information Web page.
Is there anything I can do to support the conference?
Please encourage your students and colleagues to attend the conference by making announcement and posting a Creative Collaborations poster outside your office to encourage participation and attendance.
