Poster Preparation for IMS Printing
USD Poster Printing Guidelines:
- Creative Collaboration presenters may use the USD Instructional Media Services (IMS) printer to print their posters. The printer can produce a full-sized poster on one large piece of paper. The costs of printing your poster at IMS will be paid from the Creative Collaborations budget and students will not be charged for the printing of one poster at IMS.
- Printing will occur during the scheduled print times which must be scheduled in advance. Time slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
- When the printing schedule is full, other presenters may take their electronic poster file to Kinko's Printing or another off-site printing company. You are responsible to pay for any off-site printing.
- If you do not show up at your scheduled printing time, there is no guarantee that your poster will be printed through IMS and you may need to print off-site and pay for the printing on your own. Printing costs off-site can be at least $80.
Preparing Files for Printing at USD Instructional Media Services (IMS):
- Design your poster using the (40"x36") PowerPoint Poster (slide) template. For posters that are being printed by IMS, please note that your poster should be 40"x36" - no larger.
- Two versions of the USD logos are included for your use as part of the preset PowerPoint slide.
- To avoid formatting problems, use Myriad or Garamond as your type font.
- Font size is represented in picas. Seventy-two picas equal an inch. Title text could be somewhere around 72-144 picas (1-2 inches tall). Body text, possibly 18-30 picas.
- Include funding source information on the poster that may have contributed to your research.
- Avoid using low-resolution images. Images captured from the web are usually low resolution causing poor print quality. Ideal resolution is 150 pixels per inch at placement size.
- The IMS lab uses Apple computers. Therefore, it's important to confirm that all formatting of posters created on a PC look correct when viewed on an Apple Computer. Sometimes conflicts can appear between different versions of Microsoft Office and the migration from a PC to an Apple computer.
- Double-check your work carefully for accuracy. You are responsible for ensuring your file does not contain any mistakes! The presenter(s) for each submitted abstract/presentation is/are entitled
to ONE free poster printing by IMS at your scheduled time (see conditions
elsewhere in this document). Reprints at IMS will cost you $30 each.
- Save your finished PowerPoint file as a PDF file to retain the original text, graphics, etc. If you are not able to save your poster as a PDF, it will be done when you bring it in for printing.
- Name your file using your first and last name (first_lastname.ppt).
Electronic Files and Poster Printing:
- At your scheduled printing time, bring your PowerPoint and PDF files on a Flashdrive or CD to Maher Hall, Room 176C. If you were not able to save your poster as a PDF, it will be done when you bring it in for printing.
- Be prepared to review your work on site immediately prior to printing.
- Return later to pick up your printed poster. It will be rolled up with your name attached to the outside of the rolled poster.
- If you do not show up at your scheduled printing time, there is no guarantee that your poster will be printed through IMS and you may need to print off-site and pay for the printing on your own. (see above).
