2014-2015 Idea Labs Series

During the 2014-2015 school year the Center for Peace and Commerce will host a series of Idea Labs to prepare students to enter the Social Innovation Challenge. Idea Labs are open to all USD students and all degree-seeking university students in San Diego.

Idea Lab 1: Inspire

Thursday, October 2, 2014 12:30-2:00 pm, KIPJ Theater

What inspires you? Ignite your sense of purpose and passion at the first Idea Lab of the 2014-2015 season by hearing Tiffany Persons, founder of Shine on Sierra Leone, share how she has strived to promote positive social change. Shine on Sierra Leone is an innovative non-profit organization that actively raises awareness for Sierra Leone’s incredible needs and creates sustainable programs to promote thriving self-sufficient communities and rich cultural experiences in both Sierra Leone and the United States. This Idea Lab is sponsored in partnership with the Changemaker Hub, Office of Community Service Learning, and the Kroc School of Peace Studies.

USD Entrepreneurship Legacy Conference  (Hosted by V2)

The USD Entrepreneurship Legacy Conference (ULEC) is our premier networking/coaching event for anyone who has ever thought about starting their own business. It is open to all students, from all majors. On this special night you will be able to network one on one with real-world, successful entrepreneurs, get practical insight on ways to start you own business, and get ready to compete for $25K at the annual V2 Pitch Competition and the $75K Social Innovation Challenge.

 


Idea Lab 2: From Inspiration to Action

Tuesday, October 21, 2014, 12:15-2:15 pm, KIPJ rooms ABC

Take the first step toward putting your inspiration into action by learning entrepreneurship principles from Brant Cooper, author of the New York Times Bestseller, The Lean Entrepreneur: How Visionaries Create Products, Innovate with New Ventures, and Disrupt Markets. This Idea Lab will help you develop and validate your social venture idea to make sure it’s what people and communities really want and need. A breakout session following the presentation will give you an opportunity to work on your ideas with peers, mentors, and potential teammates.

Idea Lab 3: Ideas Meet Reality

Tuesday, November 18, 2014, 12:15-2:15 pm, KIPJ rooms AB

Former Social Innovation Challenge winners return to share about the progress of their SIC projects and mentor current students. Learn how to pivot and tackle the challenges of implementation, and work with mentors to turn your idea into a successful social venture for the SIC. This Idea Lab is co-sponsored by the Changemaker Hub.

Idea Lab 4: Business Model Creation

A business model is a written plan that describes how your venture creates, delivers and captures value. Learn how to express your idea through a clear and viable social venture or for-profit business model, and start to prepare your written plan for the SIC and V2. This Idea Lab is co-sponsored by the V2 Pitch Deck Competition.

Idea Lab 5: Advance Workshop (required for SIC Semi-Finalists)

Thursday, March 5, 2015, 12:15-2:15 pm, KIPJ rooms AB

Advance your SIC project to the next level by identifying your venture’s strengths and weaknesses, and learn what it takes to captivate an audience and funders with a compelling pitch. A workshop for students to work in their teams and with mentors to craft their pitch and refine their written plan to be entered into Round 2 of the SIC.

Idea Lab 6: Speed Coaching (required for SIC Semi-Finalists)

Tuesday, March 17, 2015, 12:15-2:00 pm

Semi-finalists pitch their SIC ventures to successful entrepreneurs. Students meet with experienced for-profit and non-profit social innovators for a few minutes each to practice pitching their idea, and get helpful feedback for improving their pitch and written plan for round 2 of the SIC.

Idea Lab 7: Final Pitch Rehearsal (required for SIC Finalists)

Thursday, April 16, 2015, 12:15-2:30 pm

The finalist teams in the 2015 SIC practice their final pitch and receive feedback from expert guests.
