USD Welcomes 4,500+ Students for Steubenville Faith Conferences

The University of San Diego will welcome more than 4,000 high school-aged students and another 400 college-age students who are both connected to Steubenville, Ohio, for separate conferences both taking place July 28-30 on the USD campus.

The 15th annual Steubenville San Diego Youth Conference, hosted by Steubenville's Franciscan University, is a regional event — USD is hosting it for the sixth year in a row — that specializes in addressing the needs of today’s Catholic youth. The 4,000-plus participants will utilize much of the campus during the weekend, including big multiple daily gatherings in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Steubenville youth conference in San Diego is one of 18 such conferences held across the nation, appealing to more than 40,000 young adults each summer.

In addition to the youth conference on the USD campus, there is also a Steubenville 18:23 conference for 400-plus college-age students who are strengthening the bond they started in high school.

As a result of these conferences and the high-volume use of the campus, USD officials communicated that people coming to campus either for work or events other than Steubenville-related activities may encounter traffic delays and road closures. USD’s Auxiliary Services noted the following items to keep in mind:

  • Torero Way will be closed from the Maher traffic circle, to the front of the Student Life Pavilion, from July 27 at 11 p.m. until July 30 at 3 p.m.
  • Please expect heavy bus traffic around campus from noon to 4 p.m. on July 28, and again from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. on July 30 in the housing areas of campus and the School of Law parking lot.
  • Please expect heavy pedestrian traffic to and from residence halls and Jenny Craig Pavilion from July 28 at 1 p.m. until July 30 at 2 p.m.
  • Additional delays, closures, and re-routing of pedestrians and traffic may take place July 28-30. Please abide all traffic and parking signs on campus.

The large crowds for this weekend’s conference — in which students from more than 150 parishes throughout the west coast attend to nurture their passion for God and Catholic faith — also means that several USD campus departments will be working to ensure that the events — from meals to masses — go off without a hitch.

Staff from USD's Auxiliary Services, Hospitality Services, Facilities Management, Public Safety, Undergraduate Admissions, Mission and Ministry, Parking Services, Hahn University Center, Residence Life, Athletics and The Immaculata Church will each play a role.

"The west coast is the largest of Steubenville's conferences," said Merrill Marker, director of conferences for USD's hospitality services. "There are a lot of logistics involved and it takes a number of departments on campus to make it all work.”

But the reward for the hard work, she said, is worth it. "We understand that people's lives are being changed this weekend. With Steubenville, everyone comes together and everyone wants to make it work because you see something really good happening here.”
