August graduates may participate in May Commencement if they have registered and paid for their remaining courses through University of San Diego Summer Sessions by May 1. There are no exceptions to this policy; unavailability of a needed course in USD’s Summer Sessions will not be grounds for an exception.
August graduates who wish to take courses elsewhere (after procuring the appropriate waivers) may do so, but they may NOT participate in the May ceremony. (NOTE: Summer Session courses taken in USD's sponsored Summer Study Abroad programs will meet the requirement for courses taken at USD. Students wishing to participate in May Commencement may NOT complete their coursework with an Independent Study (499) during the summer.)
Both the USD Spring semester and Summer Sessions' course offerings are made available in the Fall semester so students may plan their course schedule accordingly (please see the academic calendar for dates and deadlines of intersession, spring semester and summer sessions registration, payment deadlines, priority deadline for Intersession, Spring semester, and Summer Sessions financial aid applications, and other important deadlines). Courses needed in Summer Sessions to complete degree work must be taken at USD.
August graduates who wish to participate in May Commencement should register for Intersession and/or the Spring semester for any needed courses NOT being offered during USD Summer Sessions. As noted above, unavailability of a course in USD Summer Sessions will NOT be grounds for an exception to the policy about Commencement participation. In the case of extraordinary circumstances beyond the student’s control, an exception might be granted. The student should contact the dean of his or her school to request an exception.
In cases where financial aid is involved in attending USD Summer Sessions, an application must be filed by the date listed in the academic calendar, so that the request can be processed before May 1. Financial Aid applications for USD Summer Sessions will be available in the Financial Aid Office on or after February 1.
August graduates will not be able to pick up cap and gown until they have registered and paid by May 1 for remaining courses to be taken at USD Summer Sessions to complete their graduation requirements.
Undergraduate Seniors graduating in August who have additional questions after checking their DARS should contact the Office of the Registrar (firstname.lastname@example.org) call 619-260-2888. More information can also be found at the Office of the Registrar website.

Master's and Doctoral Students
August Master's and Doctoral students may participate in the May Commencement only if they have nine or fewer units remaining and if those units are in regular classroom courses, practicum, fieldwork, student teaching or internship. In order to receive permission to participate in Commencement, eligible students must register and pay in full for their remaining units to be taken at USD no later than May 1.
August Master’s and Doctoral students may NOT attend May Commencement if their remaining work includes independent study, foreign language or comprehensive examination, independent final project, integration paper, master’s thesis, or doctoral dissertation. If you withdraw from your summer course(s) after having participated in the May commencement, the tuition charges for your Summer courses will remain on your account, no money will be refunded to you, and any outstanding balance will remain due.
NOTE: Courses needed in Summer Sessions to complete degree requirements must be taken at USD. Unavailability of a needed course in USD Summer Sessions will NOT be grounds for an exception to this policy. Exceptions to this policy might be approved when there are extraordinary circumstances beyond the student’s control, in which case the student should request an exception from his or her school’s dean. August Master’s and Doctoral students wishing to take courses elsewhere to complete their degree requirements may do so, but they may not participate in May commencement.
Please see the academic calendar for dates and deadlines of Intersession, Spring semester and Summer Sessions registration, payment deadlines, priority deadline for Intersession, Spring semester and Summer Sessions financial aid applications, and other important deadlines.
