Minor in Classical Studies

The classical world was the crucible in which Christianity and the western artistic, literary, philosophical, and political traditions were formed. The Classical Studies minor is an interdisciplinary academic program designed to provide students in all majors with an opportunity to enrich their understanding both of the western tradition and of themselves by studying the history, cultures, religions, and languages of the Greco-Roman world.

Requirements:

Option 1:

Three semesters in a classical language and 9 units from the upper-division Classical Studies courses from a minimum of two disciplines (listed below, under Option 2), plus either a fourth semester in a classical language or 3 units from the lower-division Classical Studies courses (listed below, under Option 2). Currently the classical language courses offered at USD include:

Greek 101: Elementary Greek, First Semester
Greek 102: Elementary Greek, Second Semester
Greek 201: Intermediate Greek, First Semester
Greek 202: Intermediate Greek, Second Semester
Latin 101: Elementary Latin, First Semester
Latin 102: Elementary Latin, Second Semester
Latin 201: Intermediate Latin, First Semester
Latin 202: Intermediate Latin, Second Semester

Independent Study classes are also available in both Greek and Latin (see below).

Option 2:

18 units, including 6 lower-division units from the courses below, and 12 upper division units from a minimum of two academic disciplines.
