What can you do to change your community?
Did you know that USD students dedicate nearly 400,000 hours of community service each year? The possibilities for creating change in our San Diego community are limitless. What are your ideas for making a difference on campus or in the community?

I know it sounds cliché but, lead by example. Nothing better than to be the change you want to see.

Education is the biggest thing. If people are not educated or aware of the problem at hand, then how can we change it?

Positivity and friendliness go a long way! Go out of your way to say hi to someone. You don’t know what kind of impact it can have on them.

The change starts with you. If you see something you don’t like, try and change it. You can’t count on other people to do it for you. However you can make people see the problem and try to change it also by making a strive to change the problem.

I agree that change comes from within. If one can find the ability to recognize differences within themself and others, change will occur. Sometimes it is difficult to recognize change, however. As humans, it seems as if we strive for instant gratification, which certainly is not always the case. We can create “change” at USD by experiencing personal growth, all the while focusing on bettering each individual. One act of gratitude will go a long way, so my belief is to begin with yourself and the kindness & change will spread.

Start a movement or an organization to help change part of your community that you see as a problem. For example if you want to take action against the litter on the streets start a clean up group and help spread the idea that littering is bad and people should take care of their community because it affects everybody.

Make yourself a better person and you will better your community. Start small and work your way up to bigger things. Even a smile can change someone’s day.

I have learned that a Change maker can be anyone who wants to be. A change maker is a person who listen and observes. A change maker is a person who takes action. A change maker is a person who genuinely wants to make a difference. We have so many change makers in our USD community, everyone doing their part to make our campus a better place. In order to change my community, I want to make USD an inclusive environment, and a place where people know they belong.
