THE BIG READ RETURNS TO USD
The University of San Diego and the Black Storytellers of San Diego will present book discussions, a movie night and a keynote address by Sister Helen Prejean, reknowned author of Dead Man Walking as part of its celebration of A Lesson Before Dying during October 2009. San Diego is one of 269 communities nationwide participating in The Big Read, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) designed to restore reading to the center of American culture, from September 2008-June 2009. To date, the NEA has funded more than 800 Big Read programs in the nation’s towns and cities.
The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. Support for The Big Read is provided by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Transportation for The Big Read is provided by Ford.
USD and BSSD will feature book discussions on October 19 and 23 and a keynote event. Associated Students is sponsoring a film viewing on Tuesday, October 20. The Big Read at USD is presented in partnership with the Black Storytellers of San Diego, Inc.

CEE LAUNCHES FACULTY GRANT PROGRAM
A new CEE travel grant program has been developed to help expose faculty to key issues in teaching and learning in higher education by attending prominent conferences on higher education. CEE supports travel for up to 3 faculty to attend a leading conference during the 2009-10 academic year. Grant amounts $500 - $1500 each. A committee will review and evaluate grant proposals on the strength of their connection to the mission of the university and to the perceived benefit towards increasing our community's understanding of current issues in American higher education. Presenters will be requested to present information to other USD faculty at a lunch & learn session after attending the conference. For more information and for application materials, please visit http://www.sandiego.edu/cee/ceegrants.
NEW FREQUENT ATTENDANCE REWARDS
CEE introduces a recognition program to reward participation and involvement in the center's activities. The goal of this innovation is to increase participation in CEE events. This system honors the time and efforts that faculty and staff make toward improving teaching excellence and organizational development to enhance student learning. The idea is based on research indicating the importance of recognition in faculty development (Sorcinelli 1985; Seldin 1987; Fideler & Sorcinelli 1992; Sorcinelli 2002).
Faculty and staff earn credits throughout the academic year for attending events and/or presenting and facilitating programs. These credits are accumulated for one year.
The benefits of this program include invitation to an end-of-the-year recognition event, which includes an awards ceremony. Awards are given to the faculty or staff member who invested the greatest number of hours in development activities over the academic year. A list of events recognizing participants will be distributed which can be included in annual evaluations and promotion and tenure packets. Participants and presenters will also receive recognition of their efforts by being listed on our website and reported to their deans and department heads. To learn more about the CEE involvement recognition program, please contact the CEE.
CEE OPEN HOUSE EVENT
The Center for Educational Excellence is celebrating its ten year anniversary on September 15 with an Open House event. Established in fall 1999, the center began as the Committee for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning with the role of providing a variety of staff development opportunities for faculty related to teaching and/or assessment of student learning. Initial committee members were Paula Cordiero (chair), Alana Nicastro, Susan Brizziarelli, Mitch Malachowski, Chris Wonnell, Mary Williams, Jane Georges, and Manzur Rahman who brought to the table their knowledge and expertise on developmental learning theory, cultural competence, distance education, assessment, measuring student achievement and recognition of the need to develop teaching resources and mentorship for USD’s faculty.
Under the Center's first director, Dr. Carole Huston, the center became known as the Center for Educational Excellence in 2007. This new name reflected the expanded efforts of the center. Diversity programs that had historically been offered on campus under the Faculty Curriculum and Development Program became part of CEE’s new function.
On September 15 from 1:15 - 2:15 pm CEE staff invite the campus community to visit our offices in Copley Library and to celebrate center milestones and the continuation of faculty, staff and organizational development at USD. Refreshments will be served.
