Polynesian Dance and Culture with Francine Cepeda Blacksher of Kaleo 'Onalani Location: Malcolm X Library, Multipurpose Room Host: Jesse Mills, Ethnic Studies Department, USD Francine Cepeda comes from a Chammorro (native to Guam) and Mexican background and has been dancing since the age of two. Cepeda dances with the Halau (Polynesian dance group) Kaleo ‘Onalani under Kumos (teachers) Ida and Siasosi Veimau from the island of Tonga (www.kaleoonalani.com). Cepeda’s vision and activism come together in the Pacific Islander after school youth program she developed to promote self-awareness, preservation of cultural knowledge, and cultural exchange through dance and art. Cepeda has run this program successfully at two middle schools in Southern California. |
