The UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO invites applications for the position of chair, Department of Theology and Religious Studies, to begin September 1, 2015. This appointment will be tenured at the rank of associate or full professor, contingent upon successful completion of the university tenure process. Candidates should have demonstrated excellence in teaching and scholarly research with publications appropriate to senior faculty rank. Successful experience as department chair preferred.
The candidate for chair should be a theologian with a doctorate in one of the following areas of Catholic theology: historical theology, church history, systematic theology, theological ethics, or biblical studies. Candidates should have an extensive understanding and appreciation of the intellectual traditions of the Catholic Church, its social teaching, and their relationship to the university’s mission. Candidates should hold tenure or its equivalent at their current institution. We seek a colleague who has a record of active and continuing research, proven excellence in teaching and advising students, and the ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and university administrators. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, evidence of collaborative leadership, and a vision for the department’s future are essential.
In addition to chair responsibilities, the candidate should be prepared to teach undergraduate courses in his/her area of expertise. The candidate is expected to maintain an active research agenda. Salary will be commensurate with experience and rank.
