Eren Branch, Ph.D.
Associate Professor
Eren Branch joined USD in 1985 after working as an information officer at the Fulbright Commission in Stockholm and, before that, teaching part-time at the University of Cincinnati. For her first twelve years at USD, she served primarily as an administrator (as Associate Dean and then Dean of the School of Graduate and Continuing Education) and joined the English Department full-time in 1997.
Education
Professor Branch, a native San Diegan, grew up in Italy. She earned an A.B. in English from Bryn Mawr College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in English and Comparative Literature from Stanford University.
Scholarly and Creative Work
Her current scholarship focuses on works by several twentieth-century Italian writers, Italo Calvino, Giorgio Bassani, and Renata Viganà in particular, and on recent illustrations for Dante'sDivine Comedy. Earlier publications include a study of Boccaccio's Teseida and translations from Italian of essays in microhistory.
Teaching Interests
Most recently, Professor Branch's teaching has centered on Dante's Divine Comedy and on twentieth-century Italian literature. She has also taught courses on Italian American literature, on modern reinventions of classical myth, and, through the Honors Program, on opera and literature.
