Assistant Professor of Sociology
John Joe Schlichtman, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Community, Urbanization, and Culture Concentration within the Department of Sociology at the University of San Diego. His research areas include urban political economy, globalization, urban change, small cities, and homelessness. Prof. Schlichtman is a recent recipient of the "Order of Omega" and the "Professor of the Game" awards.
Education
Professor Schlichtman received his B.S. in Finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from New York University.
Scholarly and Creative Work
Schlichtman’s current research explores how cities forge global centrality by creating an economic specialization in the global service economy. His recent article on the topic, "The Niche City Idea: How a Declining Manufacturing Center Exploited the Opportunities of Globalization" in the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, maintains that in this unique historical moment, some established cities may find themselves unseated by younger, more specialized upstarts. Another interest of Prof. Schlichtman is in the area of ethnographic methods. His recent co-authored piece, "Contextualizing Impressions of Neighborhood Change: Linking Business Directories to Ethnography" in City and Community, encourages ethnographers to shore up—rather than gloss over—potential doubts concerning the degree, specificity, subjectivity, and causality of apparent urban change in their field sites. Schlichtman presents his work at the meetings of the American Sociological Association, the Pacific Sociological Association, the Global Studies Association, and the International Sociological Association.
Teaching Interests
Professor Schlichtman teaches courses in the Community, Urbanization, and Culture Concentration such as Perspectives on the City, Cities in a Global Context, and The Modern Urban Community, and special topics courses such as Seminar on Homelessness.
