John Joe Schlichtman, PhD

John Joe Schlichtman, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Community, Urbanization, and Culture Concentration within the Department of Sociology at the University of San Diego. His research areas include urban political economy, globalization, urban change, small cities, and homelessness. Professor Schlichtman has received commendations from the Black Student Union, the Order of Omega, and the College of Arts and Sciences for his teaching and service.

Education

Professor Schlichtman received his B.S. in Finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Urban Sociology from New York University.

Scholarly and Creative Work

Schlichtman’s primary research explores the role of cities, especially small cities, in the global context. Another vein of Professor Schlichtman's research relates to qualitative research methods, especially the integrity of ethnographic work. His recent research has been published in International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, City and Community, and in various book chapters. Schlichtman, a member of the Research Committee 21 on the Sociology of Urban and Regional Development of the International Sociological Association, has recently presented his work in Amsterdam, Tokyo, and São Paulo. He is involved in efforts to address homelessness in San Diego and is working toward opening a vein of related research.

Teaching Interests

Professor Schlichtman teaches courses in the Community, Urbanization, and Culture Concentration such as Contemporary Social Issues: Community, Urbanization, and Culture, Cities in a Global Context, and Urban Sociology, and special topics courses such as Seminar on Homelessness. Schlichtman also teaches Qualitative Methods.
