The University of San Diego Department of Political Science and International Relations is pleased to host a talk entitled "Azerbaijan and the Caspian Region" by the Consul General of Azerbaijan (Los Angeles) Nasimi Aghayev. For additional information, please contact Dr. Randy Willoughby at rwilloug@sandiego.edu.

Azerbaijan is the largest country in the Caucasus region located at the crossroads of Western Asia and Eastern Europe. It has an ancient and historic cultural heritage, including the distinction of being the first Muslim-majority country to have operas, theater and plays. The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the first-ever parliamentary democracy in the Muslim world, was established in 1918, but was invaded by the Bolshevist Russia in 1920. Azerbaijan restored its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Having the most developed economy of the region and staunchly secular, Azerbaijan enjoys excellent relations with the United States, as well as with Turkey and Israel.
