A Wealth of Experience: Iris Engstrand

Inside USD -- When it comes to the University of San Diego, history professor Iris Engstrand certainly knows what she’s talking about.

Now in her 45th year of teaching at USD, Dr. Engstrand has been with the university since 1968, four years before the merging of the separate colleges for men and women. Personable and intelligent, Dr. Engstrand speaks fondly of her experiences at USD, from her admiration of USD students to her passion for San Diego. In her years at the university, she has witnessed the school change and grow, along with her own accomplishments and even her family.

“I think I was the first person who gave birth while I was teaching!” Dr. Engstrand laughs, reminiscing on the birth of her daughter in 1972, who is now also a professor at the university. At the time, there was no daycare at the university, so Sisters of the Sacred Heart at the school kindly cared for her daughter while Dr. Engstand taught her classes.

“I kind of fit right into the whole university climate,” Dr. Engstrand continues, speaking fondly about the welcoming environment and her quick rise to leadership at the university. (See More)
