Supporting a Politician Through Scandal

Message

KPBS — A recent poll indicates that more than 70 percent of San Diegans want Mayor Bob Filner to resign.

All of the accusations, statements and apologies from the key players in the developing story about allegations of sexual harassment in Mayor Bob Filner's office and calls from former mayoral supporters for his resignation.

That means about 30 percent either haven't made up their minds or are supporting the embattled mayor. So, how do people make up their minds about whether to stick with a politician or not?

American politics has plenty of examples of politicians who've survived scandals, the primary being President Bill Clinton. How much are people willing to overlook in their elected officials and why?

University of San Diego Associate Professor of Sociology Tom Reifer was among the guests on the KPBS Midday show.
