Making an impact outside of the classroom

Belinda Lum, PhD has students in her Methods of Social Research class working with the Chavez Learning Clubs of San Diego, the Bayside Community Center, and Twain High School.  Students work with elders and school-aged youth as mentors, volunteers and tutors while conducting participant observation, a form of sociological research where behavior is studied by becoming a part of the subject group.

For one group of students in Lum’s class, working with at-risk high school students provided an opportunity to learn how to conduct research while also volunteering in the community.  This experience helps bring their research alive, keeping students engaged while they develop new skills in their field of study.
