San Diego Union-Tribune--USD junior Gunner Wiebe finished at even par over three rounds Tuesday to win medalist honors at the WCC Men’s Golf Championships in Vallejo.
Wiebe fired a final-round 72 in windy and wet conditions, completing the three-round event at 216 (73-71-72) to beat out Pepperdine’s Carl Smith IV by two strokes (72-73-73) at 6,762-yard Hiddenbrooke Golf Club.
The 27th-ranked Toreros shot the best final-round score (296), but it wasn’t enough to overtake Pepperdine for the team title. The 33rd-ranked Waves finished with a 303. Pepperdine’s three-round total of 887 was five strokes better than the Toreros. USD began the day in third place, 12 strokes back of the Waves.
Besides Wiebe, the Toreros received solid final rounds from Alex Ching (73), Scott Brace (75) and Kenneth McCready (76). Ching, last year’s WCC Freshman of the Year, finished in eighth place at 223 (77-73-73). (Full Story)
