Humanities Lecture looks at contribution of Ellen Browning Scripps

Message

The College of Arts and Sciences presents the annual Humanities Lecture on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 5:30p.m. in the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice Theatre.  This year Dr. Molly McClain will be speaking on “Ellen Browning Scripps: Journalist, Suffragette, Investor and Philanthropist.”

Ellen Browning Scripps (1836-1932) appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in 1926 as one of the leading philanthropists of her day, having given away the equivalent of $100 million dollars to the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, the Scripps Memorial Hospital, and Scripps College, among other institutions. She never married but spent her life helping her brothers make a fortune in the newspaper industry. This lecture explores her career as a journalist and her social advocacy.   It also emphasizes the importance of women in philanthropy, a tradition of leadership that continues to the present day.

Molly McClain, Ph.D. is an associate professor in the department of History and director of the Interdisciplinary Humanities program.  She received her Ph.D. in history from Yale University and has published a biography on the duke and duchess of Beaufort as well as articles on Queen Mary II.  As co-editor of The Journal of San Diego History she also publishes on local history and is currently working on a biography of Ellen Browning Scripps.
