This exhibit focuses on the teaching and research uses of the David W. May American Indian Collection, which contains a wealth of beautiful ceramic vessels, baskets, pieces of jewelry, carvings, textiles and paintings. A recent student project in chemistry will be featured that looks at the potential for determining what was consumed from mugs made in the Mesa Verde region of the American Southwest more than 700 year ago. The student project examined the mugs with analytical chemistry techniques, specifically searching for evidence of chocolate, a substance detected in pitchers from the neighboring Chaco Canyon region of New Mexico.
