About the Scholars
In 1988 a special endowment was given to the University, and the formation of the Choral Scholars was made possible. Many students audition annually, however only a limited number are selected for membership each year. Recipients of this unique scholarship are highly trained and gifted students of high academic caliber. The Choral Scholars perform for various functions both on and off campus.
This is a very high profile group – serving as ambassadors of the University of San Diego. Under the direction of Edwin L. Basilio, Ph.D. -- a 2002 USD graduate -- the Choral Scholars perform a wide variety of challenging literature of all periods. In its programming, the ensemble is committed to enriching, entertaining, and challenging audiences with important eclectic choral music.
Today’s Choral Scholars is a mixed-ensemble composed of a dozen undergraduate singers – 3 Sopranos, 3 Altos, 3 Tenors, and 3 Basses. All come from diverse backgrounds, including choral musicians, church cantors, students of music theatre, and actors. Recent Scholars have included members of the Lyric Opera of San Diego, the San Diego Opera Chorus, cantors at local churches, and other musical activities. Their academic majors span the offerings available at USD, including Business, Communications, Political Science, English and Music.
