Though in existence in various forms and times throughout the University’s history, 2015 marks the first ever formalized band program for USD. With support across campus from Athletics, the Provost’s Office, and the College of Arts and Sciences, a new full-time faculty member and commitment to resources is paving the way like never before for an exciting new addition to the Music Department, and campus community!
USD’s Concert Band:
For talented brass, woodwind, and percussion players, performs 1-2 times each semester. Our unique dual focus strives not only to concertize quality new and standard repertoire at a high level, but also to provide students an understanding of theory, history, and rehearsal techniques in the spirit of their liberal arts degrees.
Torero Pep Band: Combining with community members, the Torero Pep Band performs at men’s and women’s basketball games, as well around campus at other spirited events. The band also travels with the basketball team to for the March tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Torero Marching Band: The Music Department, in coordination with USD Athletics and several other areas around campus, are building a drumline and other resources into a full Torero Marching Band to premier their first field show in fall, 2017. The Band will perform several shows throughout the football season, and provide students a chance to write and rehearse stand tunes and marching drill!
The Music Department hosted their first ever High School Honor Band in January, 2016. From this event, select talented high school students will be invited to continue to play with the USD band program and earn college credit, completely free of charge! The program already exists for other USD ensembles, including jazz ensemble
