The USD Opera Workshop is an ensemble engaged in the training of students for performance in opera, operetta and musical theater.
Led by experienced professionals in theatre, opera, vocal production, and musical direction, the Opera Workshop course explores the challenges faced by the singer-actor:
- Releasing the full expressive capabilities of body, breath and voice as an integrated performing instrument
- Analyzing music for clues to characterization
- Working as part of an ensemble with other singers and instrumentalists
Course work includes actor training, vocal coaching and scene work, which culminates in a public performance.
Students experience firsthand the unique communicative power inherent in the genre of music theater. Past performances have included scenes from works by Mozart, Humperdinck, Menotti, Copland and Sondheim.
