MARS Ocean Leaders Win National Science Foundation Grant

Message

Drew Talley, Ph.D., Sarah Gray, Ph.D., and Zhi-Yong Yin, Ph.D. from the Marine Science and Environmental Studies Department, with Sandy Buczynski, Ph.D. from the School of Leadership and Education Sciences, in collaboration with Shara Fisler from Ocean Discovery Institute, have received an grant from the National Scientific Foundation for $477,000 to enhance earth science education for high school students.

The three year grant, called “OCEAN LEADERS - Developing diverse leadership for the next generation of geoscientists”, will provide authentic research experience in the sciences for underrepresented youth; provide full-ride scholarships for young scientists to attend USD; and includes funding to support our annual 24 hour expedition abroad the RV Gordon Sproul, where USD students and high school faculty will receive research experiences in oceanography.
