| Message | "Using marine trematode parasites to address macroecological questions with microscopic organisms" by James E. Byers, PhD, University of Georgia
Abstract: Like many microscopic organisms, parasites play a largely unexamined role in most ecosystems. In nearshore marine communities trematode parasites are abundant, and through their obligate multi-host life cycles they integrate the dynamics of a wide variety of organisms. Byers will present three aspects of these parasites that highlight their ecological roles, including
- the controls of their regional spatial variability
- their effects on community structure
- their utility as ecological tools to address pressing conservation concerns.
