Eric Jiang

Professor, Computer Science and Mathematics

Professor Jiang has been a member of the faculty since 1998. He teaches a variety of courses including object-oriented design and programming, data structures and algorithms, numerical analysis, data mining and neural networks. His research focus has been on information retrieval, data mining, scientific computation, Web link analysis and mining.

Education

Professor Jiang received his B.S. in Applied Mathematics from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, an M.A. in Mathematics and an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Georgia, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

Scholarly and Creative Work

Professor Jiang’s research has been primarily in parallel and distributed computing, information retrieval, Web mining and machine learning. He co-authored a book Nonlinear Numerical Analysis and Optimization, and has published papers in Neural, Parallel & Scientific Computations, Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications, International Journal of Knowledge-based and Intelligent Engineering Systems and other journals. He has also given a number of presentations at international conferences, workshops and invited seminars. Professor Jiang is currently serving on the editorial board of International Journal on Intelligent Data Analysis, and in addition he has been a reviewer for ACM/IEEE/SIAM journals and conferences.

Professor Jiang has been very actively involved in student research, and since 2002 he has sponsored several SURE/PURE funded student research projects.

Teaching Interests

Professor Jiang has taught a variety of courses at USD, including computer programming, object-oriented design, data structures and algorithm analysis, operating systems, programming languages, digital modeling, data mining and neural networks. In addition to teaching regular courses, Professor Jiang has advised computer science independent studies and Honors theses on database design and management, information retrieval modeling, genetic algorithms and applications. He has also participated in teaching team-taught interdisciplinary courses for the Honors Program at USD.
