Liberal Studies

Overview of course requirements

(Newly-Revised as of September 2012)
These requirements are in effect for all new majors beginning September 2012

I. CORE COURSES FOR LIBERAL STUDIES  All majors must complete the following course work (Grade of "C" or    better)

                LBST 200 Foundations in Liberal Studies (3) Fall only

                LBST 400  Senior Seminar in Liberal Studies (3) Spring only

                ENG 122 Compositionn and Literature for Educators (3)

                ENG 231 Children's Literature (3) Spring only

                ENG 304W Advanced Composition (3)

                MATH 115 College Algebra (3)

                MATH 200 Mathematical Concepts for Elementary Teachers I (3) Fall only

                MATH 300 Mathematical Concepts for Elementary Teachers II  (3)  Spring only

                PHIL 101 Introduction to Logic (3) or  MATH 160 Logic for Mathematics and Computer Science (3)

                     Math 160 is recommended for students whose concentration is in Mathematics

                Foreign Language 101 (3)

                Foreign Language 102 (3)

                Foreign Language (201 (3)

                     NOTE: Students must demonstrate third-semester competency through coursework or examination.  Students

                     interested in the Bi-Lingual Authorization should meet the fourth-semester competency in Spanish.

                CHEM/PHYS 105  Physical Science for K-8 Teachers (3) Fall only

                BIO 110 (3) Spring only; Pre-requisite CHEM/PHYS 105

                ENVI 110 (4) Introduction to Earth Systems

                ELECTIVES IN SOCIAL SCIENCES (6 units)  Select from Anthropology, Communication Studies, Ethnic Studies,

                     Political Science, Psychology and Sociology

                     Psy 101 Introduction to Psychology is strongly recommended as preparation for the CSET Exam

                PHIL non-logic/non-ethics e.g. PHIL 110, 111, 112, 114, 481, 483

                HIST 117 U.S. History to 1877 (3)

                HIST 389 California History (3)

                MUSC 200 Comprehensive Musicianship for Educators (3)

                THEA 155 Theatre in Education (3)

                ARTV 350 Art Fundamentals (for Educators) (3) Fall only

                EDUC 360 Physical Education in Elementary Schools (3) Not required for graduation, but strongly recommended

                     as preparation for the CSET Exam

II. CONCENTRATION (12-15 UNITS)

                All students must choose one concentration from the following list.  Specific course requirements for each

                concentration are listed in the 2012-2014 Undergraduate Course Catalog (pp. 175-177), in our Liberal Studies

                Art: History Track (12 units)

                Art: Visual Communication and Graphic Design Track (12 units)

                Art: 3D/Sculpture Track (12 units)

                Art: Photography Track (12 units)

                Art: Painting and Drawing Track (12 units)

                History Track (12 units)

                Literature Track (12 units)

                Mathematics (13-15 units)

                Multicultural Studies (15 units)

                Music (15 units)

                Science: Life Science (13-15 units)

                Science: Marine Science (12 units)

                Spanish Language and Latin American Cultures (15 units; strongly recommended for those seeking Bi-Lingual                                                        Authorization)

III. CREDENTIAL (33-35 UNITS for coursework plus 6-12 UNITS for the student teaching block)

                Credential Option #1: Preliminary Multiple Subject (33 units for coursework/12 units for student teaching)

                Credential Option #2: Level I Education Specialist (Mild/Moderate) (35 units/6 units for student teaching)
