Credential Options

Application to the Credential Program

Students are required to make a formal application to the Teacher Credential Program in the second semester of their sophomore year or immediately after declaring their major, should that occur in the junior year. New transfer students should apply during their second semester at USD, unless their advisor recommends filing an application during their first semester of attendance at USD.

The application process includes the following steps:

  • Register for and take the CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test), unless you have already taken and passed the exam. Registration information is available on the web site List USD as your recipient (code 335) when you register. You should have completed ENGL 121 and MATH 115 before taking the CBEST.
  • Complete the Teacher Credential Program application, available on the SOLES website.
  • Request a letter of recommendation from a USD professor (your preceptor or another professor who has taught you). Ask the professor to complete the "Recommendation Form" attached to the application or write a letter giving her/his assessment of your academic ability and character for teaching.
  • Submit the application, your letter of recommendation, and if available, a copy of your CBEST passing scores electronically.
  • When all materials are received, you will be invited for an interview. You will be contacted regarding date and location.
  • When you have completed your interview, the Department Chair will notify you of the admissions decision. Upon acceptance, you will be assigned a SOLES Learning and Teaching faculty advisor for ongoing professional advice.
