The Department of Communication Studies is setting up an ofrenda (an "altar" of sorts) in our conference room in Camino Hall, Room 128 in celebration of Dia de los Muertos ("The Day of the Dead") on November 1 and 2 from 12 - 2 p.m. We invite you to come check out the ofrenda, share conversation, and learn a little about the communication-realted content of a major part of Mexican folk culture. On November 1, there will also be snacks and refreshments.

Dia de los Muertos is a Latin American celebration for the spirits of the dead. We ask students and other members of the community to come and see the altar and participate in this celebration.

If you have artistic skills, write a poem or draw a calavera -- a satyrical depiction of a famous, powerful, wealthy person, or group. Calaveras (or “skulls” in Spanish) are humbling reminders that no matter how famous or powerful a person may be, we all face death. Satire has been used by the less powerful as a tool for participation in public dialogue, making Dia de los Muertos a particularly interesting subject in culture and communication.
