TBI Meets with Tijuana Mayor Jorge Ramos

Message

On Friday, May 8, 2009, a group of USD students met with Mayor Jorge Ramos to discuss the security situation in Mexico, with special emphasis on Baja California's recent cartel-related violence. Cartel-related violence dropped sharply along the border in March and April, which many attribute to the government's massive deployment of federal troops and police to the region. USD students visited the local offices of INEGI, the Mexican statistical agency, and met with Mayor Ramos as part of a special TBI seminar on Mexican security issues, with a focus on cartel violence, arms trafficking, kidnapping, border security, and other forms of crime. Mayor Ramos invited further TBI collaboration by participating in an upcoming festival to be hosted in Tijuana on May 31.
