"'I sing the pictures of the book': The Aztec Art of Performance Poetry" by Kim Eherenman, PhD, professor of Spanish


Eherenman will present on Nahuatl poetry from Pre-Columbian and Colonial Mexico, including discussion of performance practices and textual transmission. Her lecture is aimed at a general audience. Students heartily invited.

"The Nahuatl art of in xochitl in cuicatl ('flower and song') was as important as human sacrifice in Aztec society.  To 'sing the pictures of the book' was a sacred duty to maintain the precarious relationship between heaven and earth, and prevent the earth's destruction by angered gods."
