Waiver for 101 Courses
The Language Placement Policy contemplates the possibility of granting a waiver of placement to students in one of these two general situations:
- Those who have never been exposed to the language they wish to study: Typically a waiver of placement allows these students to enroll in courses for absolute beginners without having gone through the placement process. In some cases, students who have been exposed to the language exclusively in a non-academic environment also may obtain a waiver of placement and enroll in the course they choose.
- In exceptional cases, students with special needs or who find themselves in extraordinary circumstances may be granted a waiver of placement allowing them to enroll in the course they choose without having gone through the placement process.
When requesting a waiver of placement it is important to consider the following:
The placement policy (exam or waiver) covers classes taken at USD or at other institutions. You may not enroll in language classes before receiving a placement determination, which will be sent to the e-mail address you provide when you file the waiver as follows:
- During the semester (except on holidays) on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday by 5 p.m.
- once a week at all other times
The Banner system will block enrollment (with a message about not having met the prerequisite) until placement results are uploaded by ITS staff. This occurs Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 8 a.m.(except on holidays). If you experience trouble enrolling after your results should have been uploaded, contact Dr. Rubio-Fernaz (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Before making a decision on waiver of placement requests, the Department of Languages and Literatures will verify that students' claims are accurate. Since the processing of waiver of placement requests may take up to two weeks, students who wish to request a waiver of placement should plan in advance and file their requests as early as possible. Also, students who have no previous experience in the language and simply want to secure for themselves a place in a course for absolute beginners should consider initiating the placement process instead. This will produce similar results in a much shorter time.
In order to facilitate and accelerate the processing of waiver of placement requests, students are strongly encouraged (but are not required) to submit with their requests any supporting documentation they might have access to, such as high school and/or college transcripts, work schedules, letters from teachers or advisors, etc.
Deadlines to Submit Waiver of Placement Form
Deadline for intersession 2013
Whether your class is to be taken on- or off-campus, the waiver should be submitted by September 27, 2012.
This is to assure that you will have your determination before the end of the semester. No exception to the policy will be granted in the case that your proposed class begins before the waiver is granted. Do not enroll at another institution before receiving a placement determination, which will be sent to the e-mail address you provide when you file the waiver. We will not approve courses for transfer unless this process has been completed prior to taking the class.
Deadline for spring 2013
USD classes: The waiver must be submitted by 12 noon on February 4, 2013.
Classes at another institution: The waiver must be submitted no later than five business days before enrollment begins.
Do not enroll before receiving a placement determination, which will be sent to the e-mail address you provide when you file the waiver. We will not approve courses for transfer unless this process has been completed prior to taking the class.
