"La Traviata" literally means "the woman gone astray," or perhaps more figuratively, "the fallen woman."

This film of the opera by Giuseppe Verdi and librettist Francesco Maria Piave is based on "La dame aux camélias" (1852), a play adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas.

The opera is probably best known for the duet by the characters Alfred and Violette, "Libiamo ne'lieti calici" ("The Drinking Song"), from the first act. Click on the link to enjoy it.
