Former Department Chair Remembered


Former chair of the department of Spanish Graciela Graves, Ph.D., died December 31, 2008. A memorial service will be held February 20, 2009 at All Hollows Church, La Jolla, at 11 a.m.

Graves was born in Havana, Cuba on December 12, 1912. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Havana and later earned an M.A. in Oriental Arts from Columbia University. Upon returning to Cuba, she met John H. Graves, a U.S. Navy pilot. They married in 1943 and traveled extensively before settling down to raise four children in La Jolla in 1959.  Graves joined the faculty of the College for Women in 1960 and retired as chair in 1977.

Graves is survived by daughters Maria Teresa Graves (San Diego), Christine Graves Piqueras (Paris, France), Margaret Graves Esteve (Gig Harbor, WA), and by her granddaughters Arianna Piqueras and Sofia Ana Esteve. Her husband died in 1998 and her son, John, died in 2004.
