Tutoring

Free tutoring is available in the Language Center in the basement of Camino Hall (room 28) to lower-division language students as well as upper-division students enrolled in conversation or composition courses.

Information for Prospective Tutors:

Volunteers may opt for 1 unit of upper-division credit (Language 499), which covers one hour per week of tutoring and several meetings with faculty. It counts as a general elective toward graduation, but does not count toward our majors or minors.

Volunteers must have fulfilled the core curriculum requirement (Language 201). The application for fall is due no later than Tuesday, September 15, 2009. The same application may be used to apply early for spring 2010.

Information for Students Seeking Tutoring:

The focus of the tutoring program is on students enrolled in Language 101, 102, and 201, though tutors with advanced skills may also assist those enrolled in fourth semester and upper-division courses in conversation or composition classes.

Tutors may not write your papers or do extensive revisions. However, they may assist with

  • the organization and proofreading of papers that you have already spell-checked,
  • grammatical concepts
  • vocabulary building
  • conversation
  • brain-storming ideas for oral presentations
  • rehearsing oral presentations

To make an appointment, consult the schedule and then call 619.260.5907 (x5907 from campus phones) to reserve a half-hour appointment. Leave a message, clearly stating:

  1. your name
  2. your class and teacher
  3. your phone number or e-mail address
  4. the date and time you prefer

You will be notified during business hours that the appointment has been made or that the requested time is already taken.

PLEASE NOTE: Failure to show up for an appointment twice in the semester will make you ineligible for tutoring for the rest of the semester. Notify us if you need to cancel.
