Ninth Annual Monsignor John R. Portman Lecture in Roman Catholic Theology : “The Ministry of the Pope: Challenges and Opportunities” by Father Thomas O’Meara, O.P.

O’Meara, professor emeritus, department of Theology, University of Notre Dame, is this year’s Monsignor John R. Portman Professor of  Theology at the University of San Diego, being the fifth scholar to hold this endowed chair. O’Meara earned his Ph.D. from Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich as well as a Ph.D. honoris causa from Providence College and a Master in Sacred Theology honoris causa from his Dominican Order.  While in Munich, he studied with Karl Rahner and Heinrich Fries.

Past president of the Catholic Theological Society of America (CTSA) and the North American Paul Tillich Society, O’Meara was the 1991 recipient of the CTSA’s John Courtney Murray Award. His publications include Theology of Ministry (1983), Church and Culture: German Catholic Theology from 1860 to 1914 (1991), Thomas Aquinas, Theologian (1997), Erich Przywara, His Theology and His World (2002), and God in the World: A Guide to Karl Rahner's Theology (2007).
