Overview

Direct-­to-­consumer (DTC) genetic testing lets people access their own genetic information, without having to go to the doctor. This information can relate to traits ranging from earwax type to breast cancer susceptibility. 23andMe is the largest company to offer this service. For genetic information about health-related traits, however, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently barred sale of the tests on the grounds that they have not been established as clinically useful. The FDA expressed concern that consumers might make inappropriate medical decisions based on the test results. Should the FDA have forbidden the sale of DTC genetic testing for health? What trials or safeguards should 23andMe adopt before resuming operations? Do people have a right to their own genetic health information?
