Graduate Programs

Admission Requirements

Below is a list of requirements for admission to the MAIR program. Prospective applicants should keep in mind that the admissions process is very competitive and that meeting the minimum requirements is no guarantee of admission.

International Relations Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • 24 undergraduate units in Political Science, History, and/or Economics.
  • Minimum of 3.1 GPA (4.0 scale)
  • Minimum score of 153 (Verbal), 144 (Quantitative) and 4.5 on the Analytical portion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). All applicants are required to take the GRE. No other test can be substituted for this requirement. . More information on the GRE exam and test dates can be found here: http://www.ets.org/gre/
  • Official college/university transcripts from all institutions attended
  • Three letters of recommendation: at least two should be from academic references
  • Statement of Purpose: this should clearly and succinctly explain your motivation for pursuing the MAIR degree, your future career plans, and why you believe USD is a good fit for you.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for international students whose undergraduate work was not completed in English. Information on the TOEFL can be found at http://www.ets.org/toefl/
  • Up-to-date resumé

General Requirements

  1. The completed application for Graduate Admission.
  2. The application fee of $45. If writing a check, the check should be made payable to the University of San Diego.
  3. Official transcripts documenting each course taken beyond the high school level (whether or not within a degree program) and all degrees awarded. Transcripts that do not bear the registrar's signature and/or the institution's seal are not official. If your school has the capability to send secure, electronic transcripts, you can have them sent to grads@sandiego.edu. International Applicants click here for transcript information.
  4. Three letters of recommendation from professors familiar with the applicant's scholarly work or from professional supervisors who have had experience in a graduate program and who can provide information regarding the applicant's potential for success as a graduate student.
  5. Current resume.
  6. Personal statement or statements which succinctly explains your motivation for pursuing the degree, your future career plans, and why you believe USD is a good fit for you.
  7. Standardized admission test scores when required by department.
