Title

Garden Project

Message

In an effort to inform students about healthy eating habits and diet Awareness, Ethnic Studies 494 and American Indian Recruitment Program students and mentors have begun a garden at the University of San Diego.

On March 1, 2010, Michelle Jacob, PhD, offered a blessing for the land, then led a conversation about Native beliefs and the relationships we have to the land. Students planted various types of vegetables and fruits. While the garden is not meant to be a traditional Native ceremonial garden, it is our hope that this approach will affirm good relationships with the land and that it will teach students important lessons about food, health, and culture.

Thanks to the many partners in this project: USD Department of Ethnic Studies, the USD Center for Community Service Learning and CASA, USD Residential Life, and the American Indian Recruitment Programs.
