by Joseph Maningas, USD Ethnic Studies Major
Diversity has been an initiative that most college campuses in the United States strive to push. However, it has been evident that there is a lack of American Indian population in higher education. One effective solution was the construction of the American Indian Recruitment program or AIR for short. This program attempts to tackle the issues through the services it offers. AIR program consists of various services which include: tutoring, mentoring, and various other activities that promotes success in high school and moving forward to higher education. These services are provided to American Indian high school students. In highlighting the mentoring program, it is important to note that this mentoring allows American Indian high school students to seek the possibility of higher education through the mentorship of current undergraduate students. The various activities implemented in this mentoring program also allow the American Indian high school students to identify their own goals. Furthermore, these students gets a glimpse of a college life through visiting two colleges—University of San Diego and San Diego State University.
