Judith Liu has been a member of the sociology faculty since 1982. She is a Professor of Sociology, Affiliated faculty in the Ethnic Studies Program, and the Faculty Liaison for the Center for Community Service Learning. Professor Liu has taught classical and contemporary theory, culture courses, contemporary social issues, and community organizing. Her research focus is multicultural education, education in the People’s Republic of China, women and HIV/AIDS, political and civic responsibility, and community service-learning.
Professor Liu earned her B.A. in Sociology from the University of California, San Diego, an M.A. in Sociology from San Diego State University, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, San Diego. She received a post-doctorate fellowship from the Henry Luce Foundation.
Scholarly and Creative Work
Professor Liu’s research has been multifaceted. She has co-edited works on using writing as a means to facilitate multicultural education and on using ethnographic methods to study education in China. Her ethnographic work on women with HIV/AIDS and her research on missionary education in the China have been featured in numerous publications. She is working on completing a book on St. Hilda’s School for Girls, Wuchang, China, and as a California Campus Compact/Carnegie Foundation Fellow she is writing a chapter on increasing college students’ political engagement through the use of service-learning.
Professor Liu has taught a wide variety of courses at USD including the required theory courses, culture courses (U.S., China, popular), political sociology, community organizing, and preceptorial classes for over 22 years. In addition to teaching departmental courses, Professor Liu has participated in team-taught Honors courses, and has strived to increase educational access for underrepresented groups by working with the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and serving as a McNair Scholar mentor. Professor Liu has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards including the Sears Teaching Excellence Award, the Lowell P. Davis Award for Faculty Achievement, Graduating Senior Class Distinguished USD Faculty Award, the San Diego Press Club Headliner of the Year for Education, Innovations in Experiential Education Award, Outstanding Preceptor Award, and the Council for the Advancement of Secondary Education (CASE) California Professor of the Year.
