The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees responds to the growing demand for “work with meaning” by adding a summer session to its Alternative Union Break internship program. Through this unique program, over 150 college seniors and activists have joined thousands of workers in a dozen states in building stronger communities by organizing with AFSCME. Participants who have completed this program have found careers as labor organizers.

During the AFSCME Alternative Union Break Summer Session, participants will have hands-on union organizing experiences while partnered with experienced AFSCME organizers. The summer break will cover the basics of labor history, organizing strategies and communication skills.

Alternative Union Break is open to college seniors and others who are considering a career in union organizing. Participants are responsible for travel to and from the training site.
