Associate Professor, Environmental and Ocean Sciences

  • Ph.D., North Carolina State University, Marine Sciences

  • B.S., University of Arizona, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
  • Postdoctoral scholar, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

Nathalie Reyns, PhD, teaches courses in oceanography, research methods and scientific writing, and marine ecology. Reyns’ research interests focus on identifying the factors that influence the dispersal of marine organisms, to better understand the population dynamics of these organisms and the implications for fisheries management and marine conservation. Reyns is also very interested in advancing marine science education and improving ocean literacy, and regularly provides research opportunities for undergraduate and M.S. graduate students.

Areas of Expertise

Marine and Environmental Studies

Scholarly Work

Reyns' interdisciplinary research focuses on identifying the biological and physical factors (endogenous and exogenous environmental cues, hydrodynamic conditions) that influence the transport and dispersal of marine organisms, their settlement dynamics, and recruitment to benthic habitats. Research in her lab is conducted using field studies to quantify larval abundance and distribution in relation to hydrodynamic conditions. Reyns has ongoing research projects investigating a range of topics including examining larval distributions and settlement dynamics in local rocky intertidal environments. She also examines invasive species in Mission Bay, a local urbanized estuary in San Diego.

Areas of Interest

Reyns enjoys teaching both lower and upper division courses with an interdisciplinary approach. She aims to provide students with a learning environment that stimulates critical thinking and problem-solving.
