John Ryan


John Ryan has been a member of the faculty since 2008.  He is an Associate Professor of Geography and Geographical Information Science. In addition to his teaching, he has extensive experience in the private and public sector. His work in the public sector includes mapping airborne photography and developing GIS for the Red Cross during the 2005 Hurricane Katrina relief effort. He has also worked on GIS projects supporting the National Office for Drug Prevention, ONDCP. His research focuses on developing virtual mapping through the Internet and he has worked in association with Google Earth on other humanitarian relief projects.


Professor Ryan earned his B.A. in geography at San Diego State University, an M.A. in geographic methods of analysis at San Diego State University, and a PH.D. in spatial reasoning from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Professor Ryan’s life long hobbies include aviation (Hang Gliding and Paragliding), scuba diving, and travel (especially South America). A primary destination is Rio de Janeiro Brazil, where he has a residence. 


Scholarly and Creative Work

Professor Ryan works with the Tijuana Estuary to help develop its stake holdings through GIS. He has coordinated numerous student interns to facilitate GIS at the Estuary’s center and also to support other NGO’s that monitor and mitigate environmental areas associated with the estuarine preserve. 

Teaching Interests

Professor Ryan teaches ENVI 314 and 315 courses at USD. He also teaches at other colleges and Universities in the San Diego area, with a focus on GIS and Geography. Professor Ryan has been instrumental in curriculum development of GIS courses for the San Diego Community College District.
