Dean's Message

Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences.

The college embraces the liberal arts tradition, emphasizing academic excellence and intellectual rigor. The college is home to 20 departments and 12 interdisciplinary programs and centers, offering 29 majors and 34 minors for study in the natural and social sciences, the humanities and the arts. Our faculty members are dedicated to excellence in teaching, individual student advising, and distinguished scholarly work. Our students learn to think critically, act globally, and work collaboratively to achieve their full potential.

The college community is committed to diversity and inclusion, and values differences within the diverse society in our midst and abroad. With study abroad programs in countries from Argentina to Turkey, and research opportunities on numerous continents, our faculty and students are devoted to global engagement. Community service is incorporated into the curriculum, strengthening the bonds between students and the world in which they live.  College faculty members are at the forefront of sustainability initiatives at the university, including the launch of our new interdisciplinary major in environmental studies. Undergraduate students work one-on-one with faculty in research, scholarship and creative activity, publishing and presenting their work in diverse venues.

This Fall we welcome more than one thousand new students, from all over the United States and around the world. We also welcome eight new faculty members, in departments ranging from Art to Physics. The semester ahead promises exciting new ventures, with outstanding lectures, productions and exhibitions scheduled.
