Lambda Pi Eta Goes to Hollywood: by Kelsey Grey '15
Lambda Pi Eta Goes to Hollywood
On Friday, March 28th members of Lambda Pi Eta, the national communication honors society, traveled to Los Angeles with Dr. Bond to meet with professionals in the entertainment industry. Though many jokingly say “it’s all about who you know” when referencing the entertainment industry, we learned that the saying is actually an invaluable piece of advice during our whirlwind day trip to Hollywood. Our group met with the founders and sales director of Hu-Man Element Productions, the coordinator of international media at Paramount Pictures, and the production supervisor for CBS’s The Talk. The professionals were all very open and honest, discussing their daily schedules and what steps they had to take to get where they are. Their presentations helped me better understand their careers and what it takes to make it in the entertainment industry. Meeting with Hollywood professionals in sales, marketing/public relations, and production really opened my eyes.
Each industry professional that took the time to meet with us drove home what became the overall theme for the day – the importance of networking in Hollywood. They told us that thousands of resumes are flying into HR departments of prominent studios on the daily. Professionals do not have the time to go through all of these resumes. We learned that students who are trying to enter the industry need to find that one thing that makes us unique from all of the other candidates in the pile. Sometimes, even having that one unique thing is not enough. That is where networking plays a role. If you already have connections at a studio then those people can act as liaisons to help get your foot in the door. Even though most noted that a hard work ethic and critical thinking skills keep jobs—it can be who you know that lands them.
Our Lambda Pi Eta group trip to L.A. was probably one of the most beneficial experiences I have had on campus. The day trip really helped reinforce how hard I will have to work to turn my passion for the entertainment industry into a career. Although it was a very educational trip, we also had quite a bit of fun being on studio lots, hanging out on the set of The Talk, visiting Betty White’s dressing room on the set of Hot in Cleveland, and running into Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis. Being able to step outside the classroom and experience firsthand the life I potentially want to live made for one exciting and action-packed day!
