| Message | Bradley Bond, Ph.D., wins top dissertation award Bond analyzed the television programs, films, magazines, and musical lyrics that are most popular with adolescent audiences for depictions of sex and sexuality before conducting a nationally representative online survey of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) youth to examine the influence of media exposure on the identity development and emotional health of LGB teens. The studies that compose the dissertation are among the first to find a positive relationship between exposure to LGB depictions in the media and emotional well-being among LGB youth. A portion of the dissertation is currently in-press at the refereed journal Mass Communication & Society. The international award will be presented to Bond at the International Communication Association annual conference in London, June 2013. Bond’s Ph.D. was completed at the University of Illinois (’11) before serving as a post-doctoral research fellow at Georgetown University. He joined the faculty of the Communication Studies department in 2012. |
