USD Student wins Broadcast Journalism Award: Dana Flack

The Vista--Former writer for the Vista and USD senior, Dana Flack, is the first USD student to win the Southern California division of Radio and Televsion News Association Jim Zaillian Memorial Scholarship/Award. Three other college students in Southern California were given the same honor.

Flack was awarded $1,000 and a plaque recognizing her achievement. To apply, she submitted a resume and answered several essay questions. According to RTNA, the organization is trying to give promising journalism undergraduates a head start in the business. (Full story in the Vista)

True Warrior: Gyno Pomare

The Vista--The crowd never chanted his name as they did Gyno Pomare's when he sauntered up and down the hardwood here at the JCP. He never received the plethora of media attention that Brandon Johnson has garnered over the years, from beat reporters to bloggers alike. But when De'Jon Jackson's USD career came to an end after an ACL tear last Thursday, the least I could do is dedicate 500 words to what I consider to be USD's iron man. (Full story in the Vista)

Student Profile: Ryan Sidhoo

Ryan Sidhoo will graduate from USD with a degree in Communication Studies in May 2010. Sidhoo completed the lower division communication core classes and discovered he was most interested in the media courses and selected the Media Arts and Culture concentration. He states, "Taking classes such as Media Processes and Effects as well as Communication Criticism opened my eyes to examining popular culture from a critical perspective." (See full profile)

Notes from the Field: Kelsey Abbott '08

After graduating from USD in the Spring of 2009, I moved to Japan on invitation from the Japanese government to teach English in Japanese public school as a member of the JET program. Upon my arrival to Japan, I spoke no Japanese, knew nothing about Japanese culture, and had no formal experience teaching children. My true purpose in coming to Japan was to escape the reality of getting a 9-5 job in America and to continue on my adventurous quest to see as much of the world as I possibly could. Student Profile: Lindsey Morr

Lindsey Morr is a Communication Studies major and a Marketing minor who will graduate in May 2010. She is active in several organizations on campus including: Lambda Pi Eta (Communication Honors Society), Gamma Phi Beta, and the Advertising Club.
